Keeping up with the theme of big fights in 2023, Matchroom Boxing has announced that WBO Champion Jesse 'Bam' Rodriguez (18-0 11KOs) and IBF Champion Sunny 'Showtime' Edwards (20-0 4KOs) will square off in a Flyweight unification bout later this year. This is one of the best matchups to be made for the boxing fans.
Rodriguez 23, is one of the youngest world champions today, burst on the world scene in 2022 when he defeated former world champion Carlos Cuadras for the vacant WBC Super Flyweight title. Rodriguez made two more successful title defenses against former champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai and top contender Israel Gonzalez later in 2022. Bam has since vacated the WBC title and moved down to Flyweight where he defeated Cristian Gonzalez for the vacant WBO title. Rodriguez suffered a broken jaw in the fight which will push his unification back with Edwards to the fall/winter.
Edwards 27, is popular amongst the hardcore boxing community is at the top of his game. Edwards defeated the long reigning champion Moruti Mthalane in 2021 to capture the IBF Flyweight title. Since becoming champion, Edwards has made four successful title defenses against opponents with a combined record of 81-3 55KOs. Recently, Edwards defeated the tough Andres Campos by unanimous decision on June 10th in his Matchroom debut
